European Union leaders gather for 'moment of truth' Brexit summit

The future of the 310 mile border between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic is at the centre of Brexit negotiations

To pave the way for a deal, Fox is planning to scrap European food standards, Business Insider reported last month.

Tusk has demanded "concrete proposals" from May on how to move forward in the deadlocked negotiations. "Let me tell you categorically that these reports are untrue".

And he asked the PM to confirm Treasury legal advice to Cabinet that the Government would have to pay the European Union a "divorce bill" of £30 billion even if no Brexit deal was secured.

As Mr Corbyn and others have said: "It's groundhog day".

The cabinet meeting yesterday did not consider a specific wording on any deal, nor make any decisions, but was a discussion about the negotiations and unity.

May plans to accentuate the positive when she addresses the other 27 European Union leaders Wednesday - before they have dinner without her - by stressing how much progress has been made in many areas. "We need more weeks to see if we can get a deal".

"We want to secure a deal as quickly as possible".

"I want Britain to be a close and trusting partner for Europe after leaving", she said.

The PM should stand by her commitment to a backstop with no time limit, said Mr Corbyn, before broadening out his attack to warn that "jobs are at risk" in the vehicle industry if the United Kingdom does not sign up to Labour's policy of a customs union with the EU.

Mrs May will also have bilateral meetings with European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker, European Council president Donald Tusk, and Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

However European Council president Donald Tusk has warned that without new "concrete proposals" from the British to break the logjam over the Irish border backstop, further progress on a deal may be impossible.

SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford later urged the Prime Minister to negotiate continued membership of the single market and customs union to "avoid an economic catastrophe".

Merkel said: "The chance of achieving a good and sustainable withdrawal agreement in good time is still there, and it is really in the interest of our relations with Britain, in the interest of our economy. and of course in the interest of people in our countries".

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May addresses the House of Commons, London, with an update on the latest developments in the Brexit negotiations, Monday Oct. 15, 2018.

Mrs May issued a plea for unity as she said she remained determined to secure a Brexit that would respect the result of the 2016 referendum, protect jobs and security and preserve the Union.

In the Commons however she made clear she would not accept any "backstop" arrangement to ensure the border with the Republic remains open which effectively drew a border between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.

But she emerged from Tuesday's cabinet meeting looking relatively safe, at least for now, with the Cabinet backing her proposals in a two-and-a-half hour meeting - despite earlier threats to walk from a number of ministers.
