England ODI washed out after just 15 overs

England all-rounder Moeen Ali is expected to play a big part in the tour to Sri Lanka

The visitors, put into bat after Sri Lanka's new captain Dinesh Chandimal won the toss, breezed to 92 for 2 in 15 overs before the heavens opened.

"I remember coming here in 2014 a little bit later [during November-December], but I do remember the forecast being the same every day, and we managed to miss the rain last time", Morgan said. "We have been trying to figure out where we have got things wrong", Chandimal said.

Morgan's leadership has been instrumental in England's rise from World Cup also-rans in 2015 to the world No 1 spot.

Fans will be wishing the monsoon-season rains stay away when Sri Lanka and England face off once again in the same venue on Friday for the second ODI.

But he may face competition from Warwickshire seamer Olly Stone, who was named in his first England squad for the tour to Sri Lanka. Against Australia at Trent Bridge in June, they notched up a 50-over world record score of 481 as Alex Hales blasted 147 and Jonny Bairstow 139. "I've had to adjust to batting down the order and, if I'm batting for a long period of time something has usually gone wrong so I'd rather not bat, but I've played my part when required".

The three Tests, starting in Galle on November 6, will likely be a severe Test for an England side captained by Joe Root who have been all-conquering at home but fragile overseas in the past few years.

The three-match series will end with a farewell to spin legend Rangana Herath, 40 - the most successful left-arm bowler in Test history with 430 wickets - who will retire after the final match in Colombo.

For England, Olly Stone is in line to make it to the team as Eoin Morgan will be looking for a balanced side ahead of next years World Cup. He added that they have been playing well and further told that they are very aware of Sri Lanka's quality in home conditions. They've got some really good players and they have all the experience. He added that Sri Lanka's situation is similar to what it was of England during the mega even three years ago.

England are in the unusual position of being favourites on the sub-continent despite just six wins in 21 ODIs in Sri Lanka and a solitary series victory in 2007.

Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal admits axed predecessor Angelo Mathews remains their best one-day batsman.

"It was frustrating, especially as the umpires did call for the covers before the rain arrived, because when it rains here it rains for hours", England captain, Eoin Morgan said.
