Elizabeth Warren releases results of DNA test

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren D-Mass. speaks Aug. 8 during a town hall-style gathering in Woburn. A DNA analysis done on Sen. Warren provides strong evidence she has Native American heritage. She provided her test results to The Boston Globe for a story

Warren has released the results of a DNA analysis showing she has distant Native American ancestry in an apparent attempt to pre-empt further questions and attacks should she run for president in 2020.

The report says Warren could have a Native American relative as recently as six generations ago, giving her 1/32 American Indian heritage if accurate, according to The Washington Post.

The analysis of Warren's DNA was done by Carlos D. Bustamante, a Stanford University professor who the Boston Globe reported was an expert in the field. Which is to say: Warren identified as Native American because that was how many people in the (profoundly racist) society of early 20th century Oklahoma identified her mother.

"The first Native American in our family that can be proved is generations back, and the geneticist says there could be others", Ms. Warren wrote in a campaign email.

The first-term Democratic senator's critics have accused Warren of advancing her career by claiming minority status as a descendant of Cherokee and DE tribes.

Bustamante responds, "The facts suggest that you absolutely have a Native American ancestor in your pedigree".

Warren for years has been accused of exaggerating her Native American heritage to help get a job as a Harvard law professor.

On Monday - in a move that makes her presidential ambitions unmistakable - Warren released a test that appears to do just that.

"Trump can say whatever he wants about me", Warren said in a video released along with her DNA test.

Warren had de-emphasized her Cherokee lineage since winning her Senate seat in 2012, but the president's use of the issue to marginalize her was always expected to become a flashpoint if the two were to go head-to-head in 2020.

In it, Warren says: "The president likes to call my mom a liar".

Donald Trump has repeatedly argued that Elizabeth Warren is unfit for the presidency - because she owes her success to lies and unearned advantages.

But Trump has revived and amplified the controversy as he eyes Warren as a possible rival, frequently mocking her with the nickname "Pocahontas". The senator has told this story many times before. This is in part because Native American leaders have asked tribal members not to participate in genetic databases.

This morning, Trump declared, "Who cares..."
