Donald Trump: Sex assault claims against Brett Kavanaugh 'a hoax'

Protestors outside the Supreme Court ahead of Justice Kavanaugh's official swearing-in

It will be a moment that conservatives have dreamed of for decades, with five solidly conservative justices on the bench.

In August, a CNN/SSRS poll found that Brett Kavanaugh was the most unpopular Supreme Court nominee in modern American history, with 40 percent of Americans opposing his nomination, and only 37 percent supporting it.

Kavanaugh said at the swearing-in ceremony on Monday that "the Senate confirmation process was contentious and emotional".

He told an audience that included the entire Supreme Court and a Who´s Who of Republican movers and shakers that he had "no bitterness" and would never bring politics into the top court.

Only one Democrat, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, voted for Trump's nominee.

"If I'm chairman, they won't take it up, no", Grassley replied when asked if he would take up the confirmation of a new justice to the nation's high court should a spot be vacant.

Ultimately, every Democrat voted against Kavanaugh except for Sen.

The president went on to describe the Kavanaugh hearings as unjust to the man he appointed for a seat on the Supreme Court. There will also be those looking for any lingering signs of Kavanaugh's heated, partisan confirmation fight.

She said: "It saddens me because our judicial system has been viewed as one of the main pillars of our constitutional government".

The DCCC also says it raised $4.38 million from the end of September to October 5 - the day it was clear Kavanaugh had the votes to be confirmed.

Mr Kavanaugh denied the allegations and during a Senate hearing on September 27 accused Democrats of an "orchestrated political hit".

His ascent to the court was sealed by a 50-48 Senate vote on Saturday.

This comes after Kavanaugh was sworn in over the weekend by retired Justice Anthony Kennedy and Chief Justice John Roberts, who also attended the ceremony.

Trump on Twitter on Tuesday said he was "very proud" of Kavanaugh and his family, and disparaged the anti-Kavanaugh protesters.

And yet, it's quite plausible that installing a historically unpopular Supreme Court justice - whom most Americans regard as a sex offender - was, nonetheless, a political win for the GOP.

McConnell said he "generally" declines reporters' requests for him to critique "on a daily basis" the president's broadsides of political opponents and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with Trump's most incendiary comments about women, immigrants and other groups of Americans.

On Tuesday, the court is scheduled to hear two hours of arguments in cases involving long sentences for repeat offenders. The two parties are now tied with less than a month until Election Day.

Justice Kavanaugh can be expected to cast crucial votes on those issues as well as gun control, immigration, voting rights and others.

The ceremony took place in the East Room - the same location where the President first announced Kavanaugh's nomination 13 weeks ago. Yet, the Iowa Republican has notably declined to shut the door to a potential switch to the Finance Committee next year.
