DC Comics hires James Gunn after Disney fires him

Suicide Squad Warner Bros

In a sudden twist, former Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer and director James Gunn will be taking over another franchise for Marvel Studios rivals DC Comics and Warner Bros.

Gunn will also reportedly bring an entirely new approach to the Suicide Squad franchise, which involves a group of super-villains who get sent on shadowy government missions under threat of having surgically-implanted bombs exploded in their heads.

Is this how DC can finally beat Marvel? The big question here is whether the cast of Ayer's Suicide Squad - namely Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as the Joker - will be in the Gunn-penned Suicide Squad film.

Deadline says that Gunn is writing the sequel to Suicide Squad, and WB has asked him to consider directing it.

The studio had earlier roped in The Accountant helmer Gavin O'Connor to direct the film but he is no longer attached to the project.

The Suicide Squad job is the first Gunn has taken since departing Guardians, for which he had been expected to make a third film.

The first Suicide Squad film, which was released in 2016 and directed by David Ayer, received mixed reviews, but did earn almost $750 million worldwide - massive in comparison to its $175 million budget, before promotion and advertising. He could also be directing the film, according to multiple sources.

The film's entire main cast, including Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana and Vin Diesel all signed an open letter to Disney defending the director, expressing their "love, support and gratitude for James".

'I have regretted them for many years since - not just because they were stupid, not at all amusing, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don't reflect the person I am today or have been for some time'.
