Could Susan Rice challenge Susan Collins in 2020?

Breaking Flake Is Officially a 'Yes' on Kavanaugh

Collins did not find Ford's allegations against Kavanaugh to meet even this standard.

Thousands of demonstrators marched through the nation's capital yesterday, starting at the appeals court where Judge Kavanaugh now presides.

"But Democrats had pointed to not only the sexual assault allegations, which they described" but also questions about Kavanaugh's temperament during the hearing last week and whether he had lied about his drinking during high school and college, and what certain references in his high school yearbook meant.

Still, Kagan noted the night before that Kennedy has been "a person who found the center" and "it's not so clear we'll have that" now.

As Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh prepares to be confirmed to the nation's highest court in a final Senate vote on Saturday, Democrats have already begun considering the possibility of impeaching Kavanaugh, who has been accused by multiple women of sexual misconduct.

Kavanaugh's expected two-vote victory in itself underscored how unusually divisive his nomination fight has been. Capitol Police said 164 were arrested, raising that count in recent days well into the hundreds. Manchin added, "I do hope that Judge Kavanaugh will not allow the partisan nature this process took to follow him onto the court".

Collins noted that the Supreme Court confirmation process of Kavanaugh is akin to a "gutter-level political campaign" and a "dysfunctional circus" when it should be a "solemn occasion".

They converged on Capitol Hill and held a rally outside the Supreme Court, chanting: "Kavanaugh has got to go!"

He said he was not surprised by the support for Kavanaugh from either of the Arizona senators, who he believes made the right choice.

It was the closest roll call to confirm a justice since 1881, when Stanley Matthews was approved by 24-23, according to Senate records. Republican Lisa Murkowski of Alaska voted not to move the nomination ahead.

"Certain fundamental principles about due process, the presumption of innocence, and fairness do bear on my thinking and I can not abandon them", Collins said while addressing the central matter of the last several weeks: Christine Blasey Ford's allegation that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her at a high school party in 1982. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., responded to one protester's call for Kavanaugh to take a polygraph test, asking: "Maybe we can dunk him in water and see if he floats?"

A vote on confirmation could happen as early as Saturday.

On October 5, Joe Manchin was the lone Democrat to invoke cloture on Kavanaugh's nomination.

When Trump nominated Kavanaugh in July, Democrats leapt to oppose him, saying that past statements and opinions showed he'd be a threat to the Roe v. Wade case that assured the right to abortion. White House Counsel Don McGahn, who helped salvage Kavanaugh's nomination as it teetered, sat in the front row of the visitors' gallery for the vote with deputy White House press secretary Raj Shah. So it's a lot of work.

After the vote on Thursday, protesters once again yelled at Republican senators as they walked through the Senate building.

Grassley was pulled off the Senate floor by an aide so that he could expand on his remarks, at which point he explained that the committee's intense partisanship and heavy workload have made it a less glamorous post for any senator.
