China says missing Interpol President Meng Hongwei is under investigation

Wife of missing Interpol president says he sent her a photo of a knife

The news agency said Meng Hongwei has no public allegations against him, but officials who are under investigation by the Communist Party typically are held for months without disclosure to the public and usually are not given legal counsel.

Meng, the first Chinese president of Interpol, was last heard from on September 25 as he left Lyon - where the worldwide police organisation is based - for China. Four minutes later, he sent the photo of the knife.

That indicates Meng has been caught up in the broad anti-corruption campaign ordered by President Xi Jinping, and which has already led to the disappearance of many senior figures.

The wife of Interpol's missing president said the last text she got from her husband during his trip to China was a picture of a knife, leading her to believe it was his way of telling her that he was in danger.

Speaking in Lyon, the southeast French city where the global police organisation is based, she said the last social media message she received from her husband came on September 25, depicting a single knife emoji.

"We are always connected by hearts".

The mystery of what happened to Mr Meng has now been cleared up: but the details of the charges weighing against him, and the fate that awaits him are as opaque as ever, says the BBC's Hugh Schofield in Paris.

Meng is a senior Chinese security official as well as president of the International Criminal Police Organisation.

The World Is One News (WION) network presented this background report on the disappearance.

Grace Meng urged national governments to intervene, saying she feared that her husband's life was in danger.

Grace Meng refused to speculate on what might have happened to him or whether he had been arrested, saying: 'In China, what happened, I'm not sure'.

Interpol said Saturday it made a formal request to China for information about Meng.

"From now on, I have gone from sorrow and fear to the pursuit of truth, justice and responsibility toward history", she said.

Interpol, which groups 192 countries and is usually focused on finding people who are missing or wanted, is run on a day-to-day basis by its secretary general, Juergen Stock. Its statement said the agency "looks forward to an official response from China's authorities to address concerns over the president's well-being".
