British royals reign over drought-stricken Australian town

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

The duchess, who is expecting her first baby in the spring, ventured into the bush with Prince Harry today where she revealed that she was "a bit tired" but feeling "pretty well so far".

"I just think that it's lovely that they got off the beaten track and came out to Dubbo to speak with people affected by the drought", Warren farmer Audrey Weston told AAP.

Luke Vincent, who has Down Syndrome and adores Santa Claus, threw his arms around Meghan when she knelt down to greet him and tugged at Harry's beard and patted him on the head when the prince hugged the boy. Tuesday's trip to the Opera House marks the royal couple's last day in the Aussie city.

The prince and his US-born wife were met on Dubbo´s airport tarmac by gleeful school children waving Australian flags, before unveiling a new aircraft for the country´s Royal Flying Doctor Service at the local airport.

The royal couple were scheduled to spend their day in Dubbo, also visiting a drought-stricken farm and a local school.

"You are the salt of the earth".

To laughter from the crowd, he said: "Despite the recent welcome rain, it is going to take a lot more and a long time to recover".

'It must be hard not to lose hope when you endure so many dry months knowing you are powerless to do anything about it, ' the Duke of Sussex said.

"All you need to do is ask for it - your neighbour, your peer, your fellow farmer is literally right around the corner", he said, noting higher suicide rates in rural Australia.

"You are all in this together and, if I may say, personally, we are all in this together - because asking for help was one of the best decisions that I ever made". Royals are supposed to adhere to a very strict no autographs and no selfies rule, but it's not every day that a royal meets her doppelganger.
