Birds Drunk on Fermented Berries are Causing Chaos in a Minnesota City

Drunk birds causing trouble in Minnesota town

On social media, Gilbert residents noted seeing birds "walking on a sidewalk", while others reported hitting several with their vehicles. "They're just careless and they're not looking for cars or other obstacles".

Certain berries in the Gilbert area have begun to ferment sooner than expected due to an early frost.

Minnesota authorities released a statement on Tuesday after multiple Gilbert residents called to complain about seemingly inebriated birds that have been menacing the city.

"Drunk birds are totally a thing".

"Oh my! That explains all the birds bouncing off my window lately", said one resident. Berry fermentation is the answer.

"Generally, younger birds" livers can not handle the toxins as efficiently as more mature birds'.

"Birds actually do get literally intoxicated when they eat berries that have started fermenting, and that does lead to drunken behavior", she told the outlet.

The "public notice" even goes the extra mile by adding a humorous list of sightings that the public should be on the lookout for, including "Woodstock pushing Snoopy off the doghouse for no apparent reason", and "Any birds after midnight with Taco Bell items".

"There is no need to call law enforcement about these birds, as they should sober up within a short period of time", Techar wrote on Facebook. The birds then slam into buildings, vehicles, or just act freakish for a while before they eventually snap out of it, just like your average bar fly.

Putting decals on large reflective surfaces can help tipsy birdies avoid fatal crashes, according to the National Audubon Society, which also recommends that birds be left alone if they collide with windows and survive.
