Apple reportedly developing new video service with free original content

Apple Planning to Give Away Free Content As Part of New Digital Media Strategy

Until recently, it had been lumped in the same speculative basket as Apple HDTVs and Apple self-driving cars. Free content in Apple's "TV" appApple has previously offered some of its video content for free through Apple Music but it appears that the company will be transitioning to the ‘TV app, which is now curating content from multiple services such as Amazon, HBO, iTunes, and others.

Apple's made plenty of headlines over the past year with its push into original TV programming.

Apple is betting big on its new digital media strategy with a new TV app.

Apple's move to give away its original content may seem like not the smartest thing to do, but in actuality it's just doing what Apple has always done: provide great ancillary products-such as free video, photo, and music editing apps, free operating system updates, and even free office productivity tools, that are just another reason to buy Apple hardware.

It's not clear if the deal is limited to legacy content, or would include current TV shows like Outlander, American Gods, Game Of Thrones and Westworld. You won't have to open that service's individual app separately. Owners of Apple devices, such as the iPhone, iPad and Apple TV will find the still-in-the-works service in the pre-installed "TV" application, said the people, who asked not to be named because the details of the project are private.

Last month, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple has around two dozen shows in "in development or production".

The tech company is expected to spend about $1 billion on original content this year with an eye towards creating shows that are geared towards wide family audiences. For all we know, it could just be a mild change from what they do with the current TV app on Apple TV, so very little may actually change.

We'll be keeping a close eye on this one as it develops.
