10 cases of AFM reported in IL

What you need to know about the 'polio-like' illness popping up around the U.S

A 10th child in IL has now been diagnosed with the poliolike condition known as acute flaccid myelitis, which causes paralysis and difficulty swallowing, according to state health officials.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, AFM causes inflammation of the spinal cord area that can directly impact muscle use. Medical experts have said AFM itself is not believed to be contagious, but the causes of it could be. The disease most closely resembles polio, but doctors don't know what causes its terrifying symptoms - or how to treat them besides waiting them out. As of now there has been 10 cases of AFM reported in Northern Illinois. The CDC says the condition is not new but there's been an increase in cases starting in 2014. Among them is two-year-old Julia Payne, whose symptoms started off resembling those of a common cold. "Since 2015, four cases reviewed by CDC experts have been counted in IL", the IDHP stated.

This year there have been 38 confirmed cases of AFM in 16 states across the nation, said UH. Those who contract AFM face paralysis, long-term health problems and even death.
