Reviews have been glowing for both Cooper, who is better known as an actor in The Hangover and Silver Linings Playbook, and Gaga, stepping into some big shoes in reprising a role already immortalised by Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand. She is in her 30s, she is jaded by the music industry, having people telling her she is not lovely enough, that she could never make it.
The movie sees Cooper play a mature, seasoned musician called Jackson Maine, who then discovers and falls for Ally, a struggling artist just about to give up on her dreams. "I literally dyed my hair blonde the night that we stopped shooting because I wanted to get out of it as soon as possible", she said. While Gaga was gung-ho about becoming a pop star, Ally is someone more jaded by the industry. "In many ways it was wonderful for me because I got to experience a real challenge with this role, because in a lot of ways Ally and I are nothing alike". It also marks Cooper's feature directorial debut. She talked about how Cooper visited her at her home to pitch the project, and they sang Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Midnight Special" to test the waters.
The premiere came as the film's lead song "Shallow" was released online.
"You know, the reward for me is all in the work", the "Bad Romance" star said. Watch the trailer below.
