Before his death, McCain requested Trump not attend his funeral.

Speaking to a national conference of the American Legion in Minneapolis, Pence said he wanted to address "a particular veteran that I know is on the hearts and minds of people all across America".

"In every generation, there are those who put country first, who prize service ahead of self, who summon idealism from a cynical age".

A ceremony honoring Sen. Even as McCain battled brain cancer, Trump continued to criticize him for voting against a Republican health-care bill. Pence concluded, "May God bless the memory of John McCain".

McCain spoke out several times against Trump, including after the president's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, at which Trump appeared to side with Putin instead of USA intelligence officials on the issue of election interference.

The day before, in Phoenix, McCain was eulogized as a "true American hero" at a crowded church service for the maverick politician that ended with the playing of Frank Sinatra's "My Way".
