Timberwolves star Butler reportedly requests trade

Jimmy Butler

Jimmy Butler #23 of the Minnesota Timberwolves drives to the basket.

"At 6'8", Butler is one of the best two-way wings in the National Basketball Association. As importantly, he set an example for what many considered to be a previously soft young Timberwolves team with his tough work ethic and "never say die" attitude. Butler reportedly informed Tom Thibodeau of his desire on Tuesday.

Butler can be a free agent in July, and those three teams have the max salary space to sign him without giving up assets in a trade. Players signed this summer can't be traded until at least December 15 (and, in specific instances, January 15), which greatly reduces Minnesota's flexibility to make the best deal it can for one of the league's elite wing players.

Butler requested a meeting with the head coach to which he requested to be traded. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Butler's three choices are the New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, and the Los Angeles Clippers.

A first-round draft pick in 2011, Butler was named the NBA's Most Improved Player in 2014-15.

Butler's impact on the Wolves was easy to see last season. But the promise of potential and future success alongside Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins appears to not be what interests Butler at this time.

Butler is downplaying his fractured relationship with Towns as a reason for wanting a trade, league sources said.
