The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel wins Best Comedy Emmy

Game Of Thrones squares off agains The Handmaid's Tale at the Emmys

For the first time in six years, Julia Louis-Dreyfus did not walk away with the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Maisel - considered by many pundits to be the frontrunner heading into the show - chronicles the adventures of a Big Apple housewife with stand-up comedy dreams (and potential) in the late-'50s.

"The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" has won four awards in total, including supporting actress for Alex Borstein and lead actress for Rachel Brosnahan, in addition to Sherman-Palladino's wins. Sherman-Palladino also claimed trophies for writing and directing, and last week the series picked up three other wins at the Creative Arts Emmys, in the categories of casting, music supervision, and picture editing.

Prior to the reveal of this year's victor, many critics put their (proverbial) money on Maisel; the quirky comedy from Gilmore Girls creator Sherman-Palladino won big at this year's Golden Globes and Critics' Choice Awards, with both the show and star Brosnahan taking home top honors.

"I'll be thanking you for the rest of my life for trusting me with your Midge", she said, referencing her character.

"And one of the things I love the most about this show while I have you captive for another two seconds, it's about a woman who is finding her voice anew", she said. Vote, show up, and bring a friend to the polls.

This marks the first Emmy win for Brosnahan, who was previously nominated for Guest Actress in a Drama for her role on House of Cards in 2015.

Brosnahan is the first new victor in the category since 2012 when Julia Louis-Dreyfus began her streak for "Veep". Her ineligibility this year opened up the race and raised the stakes.
