State investigating restaurant that calmed lobsters with marijuana

Guests learn how to measure the body of a Maine Lobster is measured Monday Sept. 18 2017 in New York

A ME lobster pound is banking on using marijuana to try to make cooking the crustaceans a little more humane.

Charlotte Gill, a lobster pound owner, is trying a new technique to ease the pain when the lobster meets its untimely death: boiling water.

Gill said she had started offering "smoked" lobster meat recently and hopes to resume sales by mid-October.

But on Thursday evening, Gill said, she received notice from Maine's Health Department that she was using the marijuana in a prohibited way because "it is supposed to be used only for myself and not a lobster".

Gill's initiative has reignited a long-running debate over whether lobsters feel pain at all, given their relatively primitive nervous systems, which lack a central cerebral cortex. "It is far more humane to make it a kinder passage".

"Maybe they should consider taking a page from our book and incorporating cannabis into their practices as well", she said. The recreational marijuana law also says marijuana can not be exchanged for any type of payment or service. Ms. Gill has a license for its cultivation and supply for medical purposes.

Gill believes that the treatment sedates the animals and could make their deaths less traumatic.

She plans to offer this cooking method as an option for customers who want their lobsters to be baked before they're boiled. Earlier this year, Switzerland passed a law that live lobsters must be stunned before they can be cooked live. "THC breaks down completely by 392 degrees, therefore we will use both steam as well as a heat process that will expose the meat to 420 degree extended temperature, in order to ensure there is no possibility of carryover effect (even though the likelihood of such would be literally impossible)".
