SpaceX Launches New Communications Satellite, Sticks Rocket Landing

News SpaceX Falcon 9 Block 5 ready to launch second largest communications satellite

"We would like to thank SpaceX for the successful launch of Telstar 18 VANTAGE and for their dedication and professionalism throughout this mission".

SpaceX, the rocket company spearheaded by Elon Musk, successfully launched another Falcon 9- carrying a Telstar 18 Vantage satellite-in the early hours of Monday.

The rocket blasted off from Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Base at approximately 12:55 E.T. The name of that drone ship is "Of Course I Still Love You", because of course it is. However, several missions are now planned for the final two months of the year, including the final launch of 10 Iridium Next satellites, an uncrewed demonstration of the company's Crew Dragon spacecraft and the first Global Positioning System 3 satellite.

Touchdown took field 15 seconds after the Falcon 9's second stage engine completed the most primary of two planned "burns", inserting Telstar 18V into an preliminary parking orbit. The droneship, which was named in honor of sci-fi author Iain Banks, is a remote landing platform for the rocket.

The satellite will operate from 138 degrees east in GEO, replacing the existing Telstar 18. The record was set by its companion Telstar 19 satellite, which weighed in at 15,600 pounds and which launched in late July aboard a different SpaceX Falcon 9. By implementing these advances on Telstar 18 VANTAGE, Telesat customers across the Asia Pacific region now have a competitive edge in meeting growing demand for satellite broadband from aero and maritime service providers, enterprise network operators and leading telecom companies.

At 15,564 lbs, the satellite is the second heaviest communications satellite ever launched and is created to last about 15 years in orbit, Space.com reports.
