South Africa Listeria outbreak declared over

South Africa: Listeriosis Outbreak Officially Over - Motsoaledi

He said it was now safe to eat processed meats including polony.

The Polokwane Enterprise factory is no longer allowed to produce meat while the Rainbow Chicken factory, as well as Enterprise in Germiston, have been provisionally allowed to produce food.

South Africa's Department of Health first announced the outbreak.

South Africa's health minister declared an end to the listeriosis outbreak caused by ready-to-eat (RTE) deli meat. Listeriosis has occurred in South Africa for the last 40 years before the outbreak.

The announcement was made at the NICD on Monday.

Business Insider South Africa previously reported that Tiger Brands, the owner of Enterprise, can possibly pay between R100,000 and R2 million to the families of each of the victims of the outbreak. For the past three months, no new cases of listeria of the outbreak strain has been identified.

"We were lucky to find out that it was from Enterprise in Polokwane but we have not been able to find the source".

Symptoms from the food-borne disease include diarrhea, fever, general body pains, vomiting and weakness.

Motsoaledi said that 62% of the listeriosis cases were in Gauteng, and about 900 health inspectors in all districts were retrained.

Officials said 5,812 tons of affected foods have been recalled and destroyed since March.

And the Enterprise factory in Limpopo, identified as the source of the outbreak, could reopen in October, health minister Aaron Motsoaledi said in Johannesburg on Monday.

He said counterfeit goods were an imitation of the original product, while fake foods have been used on social media to refer to products that contain substances such as plastic.

"This will further strengthen the system to prevent and detect listeriosis outbreaks, including ongoing legislative reform regarding food safety".
