Seattle Storm wins third WNBA title

Point guard Natasha Cloud says of the Mystics “We do play our best when we’re under pressure. Everyone steps up.”

Back in their offices at Capital One Arena on Thursday morning, the Washington Mystics went about the quotidian details of breakdown day before disbanding for the offseason.

Washington came out in the second half with the hustle and desperation you'd expect from a team with their season hanging in the balance.

Seattle, which the had the best-record in the regular season at 26-8 and the No. 1 playoff seed, was too quick, too efficient on the perimeter offensively and just too good for No. 3 Washington. I'm a very left-footed player.

Also not taking this trip to the Finals for granted are the Mystics.

This is the Storm's first championship since 2010, where Bird and All-Star teammate and finals MVP Lauren Jackson defeated the Indiana Fever in a three-game sweep. The Storm were victorious 98-82 in a game that was decided in the second quarter.

But you wouldn't have known it from the vibe in the arena.

If this were the National Basketball Association, the Washington Mystics' front office might be making calls to players of Paul George's or Kawhi Leonard's caliber right now. Our team has handled it. Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner were not with the team for those two games due to their participation in the WNBA playoffs, but did join them for the trip to France.

As bedlam burst and champagne poured, Breanna Stewart stood tall inside the cramped, plastic-lined visitor's locker room and allowed herself a smile of gratification.

Before the game, Thibault seemed to understand what his team was up against; where it might struggle; what it could learn for next year and beyond. We have only played together with this core group basically for two years, and we have some reinforcements coming next year. "I felt more and more uncomfortable as we kept going". We can build on this.

STAR POWER: The matchup between Delle Donne and Stewart highlights the series. "But it won't be the end of the world if we don't".

Wednesday night was no different. We have a relatively young team.

He hopes the team's move to a new, 4,200-seat arena in Southeast Washington will help.

That won't take away from the most successful season in franchise history, though.

No one mentioned it publicly during the five-month run up to the WNBA Finals because they knew Sue Bird wouldn't approve. So it's incredible to be sitting here right now, I was just saying this earlier, I really believe it just came to me.

Part of that is simple recognition. Previous year we were brand new.

"I know in the preseason poll we were picked to finish eighth", Sanders said. It was filled with almost 10,000 fans who provided an atmosphere worthy of a Finals game.

"We thought, 'Oh, crap, what kind of year is this going to be?'" Bird reminisced. "I packed really lightly", Collier said. We showed a lot of character, a lot of resiliency.

"I know I didn't want her career to end without getting back here".

And while it will be a much smaller building than they've been used to for years, it will be much more like the ones they've played in the last couple weeks. Just as Black Mamba relinquished his throne to a younger LBJ, Diana "White Mamba" Taurasi basically passed the baton to Seattle Stew in the Phoenix Mercury's five-game semifinals loss. We don't feel like we've peaked and this was it for us.
