Russian bombers intercepted off Alaska coast for 2nd time this month

Two U S Air Force F Raptor stealth jet fighters monitoring situation

Air Force F-22 Raptors intercepted a pair of Russian bombers and their fighter escorts this week near Alaska, according to North American Aerospace Defense Command.

A similar incident occurred on September 1, the Washington Free Beacon first reported.

The Tu-95 "Bear" bombers and a pair of Su-35 "Flanker" fighters - advanced aircraft that entered the Russian arsenal in 2014 - were discovered in global airspace west of Alaska at about 10 p.m. Tuesday, NORAD said in a statement Wednesday.

Russian fighter jets were caught escorting two nuclear-capable bombers off the coast of Alaska on Tuesday - marking the second such incident this month, according to U.S. officials.

During the September 1 bomber incursion, the Tu-95s were not shadowed by Russian jets.

Those planes were also intercepted by F-22 fighters after they crossed into the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone south of the Aleutian Islands.

Officials said the "at no time did the aircraft enter the United States or Canadian sovereign airspace".

The aircraft were "intercepted and monitored" by the US jets until they left the zone, heading west.

"NORAD employs a layered defense network of radars, satellites, as well as fighters to identify aircraft and determine the appropriate response", he added.

NORAD did not say how close to American airspace the Russian aircraft flew nor in which direction.

No other details of the intercept were disclosed.

The bombers and jet fighters also were likely testing USA air defenses to gauge NORAD responses and how quickly they respond to incursions in protected airspace.

American fighter made a successful escort of aircraft from Russian Federation. According to the country's defense ministry, the Vostok - or "East" - exercise involves some 300,000 troops and over 1,000 aircraft.
