Roger Federer Says Serena Williams Umpire Row ‘Really Interesting Case To Study’

Serena Williams yells at umpire Carlos Ramos during the US Open final

Evidently, he's learned to accept defeat.

Tennis made headlines earlier this month as the US Open women's singles final between Williams and Naomi Osaka became notorious for the former's outburst at Ramos.

Outraged fans and critics called it a blatant stereotype: It shows Ms. Williams as oversized, with exaggerated hair, lips, nose and mouth, pummeling a tennis racket in a child-like tantrum.

So spare me the John McEnroe videos. Mc- Enroe himself paid multiple bad-conduct fines, but was disqualified only once, from the 1990 Australian Open. Equally, it is not unusual for a tennis player to get angry on the court, and yet Williams' anger has caused a media meltdown well beyond her own impassioned emotions. I think it really depends on the situation. Her first violation was for receiving coaching while playing.

Williams received several violations during her match with Osaka. Rules do not allow that and he took action. No questions that Serena had a halo about her that none was ready to believe or perceive that she could be caught on the wrong side.

"In tennis you might have an umpire that gives more coaching violations and another goes more to time violation". On one hand was the joy of being the mother of a lovely baby but on the other hand was the huge task of steadying her career once again and regaining her exalted status, to put it simply.

Despite coach Patrick Mouratoglou admitting he was coaching from the box, Williams doubled down on her claim, insisting she knew nothing about it. He alibied that everybody does it.

No penalty, just a warning.

"He [Mouratoglou] said he made a motion, I don't understand what he was talking about", Williams says in a clip of the interview, which airs in its entirety next week. Ramos was left with no choice but to enforce a point penalty, the clear cut result of a second code violation. He really had no choice.

This article, and much of the commentary surrounding this incident, rather dangerously conflates three separate issues: first, Ramos' treatment of Williams in the match; second, popular perceptions of Williams' behavior; and third, sexism in tennis. "If you're female you should be able to do even half of what a guy can do".

"I've played here for many years and got to the final once, so this tournament is very special to me".

Ramos refused to apologize, which prompted Williams to reply, "Well then don't talk to me".

It could've also been a triumphant return for Williams, who missed last year's Open to give birth. "Men are outspoken when they stand up for themselves". She was a victim of Osaka's six aces. "But I was like 100 percent of the coaches on [sic] 100 percent of the matches", Mouratoglou said.

Ramos had had enough.

At this year's US Open alone, only 22 code violations were issued to women, while 86 were issued to men. Serena called for the tournament referee, leading to a lengthy, confusing delay while the jeers rained down. She's supposed to know the rules.

As Mehta notes, blowing off steam is a common practice in tennis, but she neglects to note that it is also frequently penalized, even when the resultant steam lacks any F-bombs or other derogatory speech.

"I think sexism in tennis and across sport exists, I'm not beating around the bush about it".

Osaka accepted the U.S. Open trophy with tears running down her face as the crowd shamefully booed her. Serena owes her a big apology. "I have never cheated in my life!"
