Oculus announces Quest, its $399 high-end standalone headset

It comes with 2 hand controllers and 6 degrees of freedom to track those controllers.

Oculus Quest builds on what the Go offers in several significant ways.

Seeing as we have no real idea what date that actually translates to, it's hard to pinpoint exactly when to expect Oculus Quest to launch. While Oculus Go simply measures head movements and Rift made use of three Oculus Camera trackers to map a room-size space, Quest can assess a room and make a playable area with nothing but its built-in sensors. This lets you move around, taking it up a notch from the Go and situating it closer to the Rift, which costs the same amount, but is wired and requires room sensors to achieve this same feat. Oculus may have led with the Rift, but the company appears much more interested in pushing the idea of standalone VR.

Meanwhile, the Oculus Go is getting a content injection through the addition of YouTube's entire library of over 800,000 VR videos. Oculus' new expressive avatars have a more high-fidelity avatar design, but still cartoony.

Still, if developers support it, Quest could get VR into more homes and convince more consumers that the technology is viable.

That's the same price as Oculus' current Rift bundle, £100 less than a Vive, and a whopping £400 less than a Vive Pro, and that's not including the relatively high-end PC you'd need to power them. And it's only possible because of this fantastic YouTube Virtual Reality (VR) app through which you can witness any part of the world with incredible sound and visual effects. There will be more than 50 games available at launch including popular titles like Robo Recall, Moss and The Climb.

"We're excited to usher in the next era of VR gaming with the introduction of Oculus Quest", said Oculus in a blog post announcing the launch.

Within Insight, there is also a feature called Guardian that is created to avoid users from bumping into walls or other objects that might be on users way when they used Quest.
