Novak Djokovic and John Millman discuss brutal heat during US Open match

Roger Federer was knocked out of the US Open by John Millman

Marin Cilic, of Croatia, argues with the chair umpire during a match against Kei Nishikori, of Japan, in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018, in NY.

Spanish defending champion Nadal faces Argentine third seed Juan Martin del Potro in the last four as he aims for an 18th Grand Slam title.

Osaka became the first Japanese woman in 22 years to reach a Grand Slam semifinal, routing Lesia Tsurenko 6-1, 6-1 earlier Wednesday.

Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic won Wednesday night's quarter-final match against John Millman 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 at the U.S. Open in New York City, but not without another heat-related delay.

The 31-year-old earned a 6-3 6-4 6-4 victory over the Australian world number 55. 'It was hot, ' Federer said.

It all began well enough as Millman made a similarly nervous start to the one he had against Federer, when he described himself as a deer in headlights.

But the 13-times major winner's class ultimately told, gaining a decisive break in each set to advance to a last-four meeting on Friday with rejuvenated 2014 runner-up Kei Nishikori.

The common thread among almost all the U.S. Open matches this year is the excessive heat and humidity at Arthur Ashe Stadium in NY.

"I wish I don't go to five sets every time, " Nishikori said. I always play good here.

After his feel-good five-set turnaround against James Blake in the 2005 quarterfinals, Andre Agassi said, "I wasn't the victor, tennis was".

It was another hot afternoon Wednesday, with temperatures in the 30s C, but feeling much hotter due to the humidity.

Djokovic, grateful for a bit of a breather, sat grinning in his chair with his shirt off, much to the crowd's amusement. "It's just we have seen it all tournament long - the girls and the guys out there, just sweating a lot".

"So I think that's something to really think about, consider and address".

The Serb was given a time violation warning and double faulted to offer Millman a break point opportunity before losing his first serve after running down the shot clock a second time. If the stadium reverberated under the chants of "Come on, Roger!" two days back, cries of "Aussie!"

Both Roger Federer and John Isner suggested the roof structure added to Ashe two years ago has made conditions more stifling, with Federer complaining of not being able to get any air during his shock defeat by Millman.

That policy also allows for a 10-minute break between the second and third sets of women's singles semifinal matches on Thursday night.

As his Australian rival left to change into something dry, Serbia's Djokovic took his shirt off and enjoyed one of his noteworthy courtside breaks.

Millman was so sweaty that he had got special permission to change at 2-2 in the second set of his quarterfinal against Djokovic.

"He makes you work hard for every point and it's relentless".
