North Carolina shelter pets get new leash on life

Rivers and waterways in North and SC were expected to peak on Sunday and remain at risky flood levels for days, the US National Weather Service warned more than a week after the arrival of Hurricane Florence, which has killed at least 40 people.

Tammie Hedges runs Crazy's Claws n Paws, a non-profit group which helps low-income families with veterinary bills, pet supplies and other needs.

She told the publication that an elderly couple had left 18 animals with her, some of which were sick or injured. "If we didn't feel like anything was being done wrong, we should not have taken (the animals)", Sauls said, according to The News-Argus.

"Wayne County Animal Services turned the case over to the Wayne County District Attorney's office based on suspicion of practicing veterinarian medicine without a license and presence of controlled substances". It said a newly formed subtropical storm in the North Atlantic, Leslie, was expected to dissipate in a few days.

"You can voluntarily hand over the animals or I can go get a warrant", Hedges said Sauls told her, in an interview with her local CBS affiliate.

Authorities say Tammie Hedges lacked proper permits when she used a space she was in the process of turning into an animal shelter to keep 27 pets out of the relentless storm, which killed over a dozen people and an unknown number of animal companions.

Staff at Kinston's Humane Society said they've already taken in 38 dogs since Florence hit home.

"You look at the faces of these animals, and no matter how tough it gets", Learch said, "you look into their eyes, and you know that it's all worth it".

"I talked to one of the men that was here, and he said that she didn't have this registered as a shelter", she said.

Hedges is considered innocent until proven guilty, the release said.

"Our mission was to save as many animals from the flood that we could", Hedges said, according to USA Today. There was sufficient availability at the Wayne County Animal Shelter for all animals surrendered and no boarding fees were charged to the owners.

The county said it is working on checking the safety of the animals and returning them to their owners.

Cooper said DOT officials were able to quickly identify sections that needed fix and a contractor was sent to the site to begin repairs Sunday afternoon.
