NASA posts phenomenal video of Hurricane Florence from station

Hurricane Florence from space

"Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (110 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km)".

Hurricane Florence continues its march towards the East Coast of the United States today, and astronauts aboard the International Space Station got a birds-eye view of just how large the swirling vortex has grown.

The surge from Florence will be particularly risky due to the flat nature of the coastline off North Carolina and SC, allowing the storm to pile a lot of water over a large area.

Historic and potentially catastrophic flooding is possible along with life-threating storm surges of up to 12 feet are possible along the coasts.

Forecasts generally project Florence to make landfall in southeastern North Carolina on Friday as a Category 3 or 4 hurricane.

More than 750,000 homes in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia are at potential risk of storm surge damage from Florence, data analytics firm CoreLogic said Monday.

Large and unsafe, Hurricane Florence is drawing closer to the coast of the Carolinas, where it threatens to become the most intense storm to strike the region in at least 25 years, since Hugo.

In anticipation of the winds and water, 1.7 million people living along the coasts of the Carolinas and Virginia were ordered to evacuate ahead of the storm.

Nathan Deal (R) on Wednesday declared a state of emergency for the entire state as Hurricane Florence takes aim at the southeast.

Despite new projections that the storm is likely to pause over North Carolina and move southward, MVP spokesperson Natalie Cox said all efforts remain focused on preparation.

In a videotaped message from the White House, President Donald Trump said the government is fully prepared for Florence but urged people to "get out of its way". Jeff Byard of the Federal Emergency Management Agency invoked a former boxing champion to warn residents that it would bring "a Mike Tyson punch to the Carolina coast".

This contrasts with other storms, such as Harvey, which sat for days over Houston and dumped more than 51 inches of rain, killing 82 people previous year.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Goes-East weather-monitoring satellite used its lightning mapping technology for a video showing Florence, Tropical Storm Isaac and Hurricane Helene as they traveled across the Atlantic on Tuesday. "But [Beaufort County] could still end up seeing some heavy rainfall and gusty winds".

She added: "The problem is, I can't tell you the exact pin point of landfall and it could be a long duration event".

The latest projections of Florence, now a Category 4 storm, show it shifting south putting Georgia in its possible path. But North Carolina's code lagged the rest of the country by one or two cycles and didn't meet even the 2009 standards for anchoring windows and doors.
