'Monster' Hurricane Florence takes aim at U.S. Southeast

NC State–WVU in flux as Hurricane Florence looms

Hurricane Florence is expected to strengthen into a near-Category 5 storm as it approaches the United States where 1.7 million people have been warned to get out of the way. However, recent trends in the forecast models now indicate a rare-if not unprecedented for an Atlantic hurricane this far north and west-turn to the southwest before Florence resumes its west-northwest motion.

On Tuesday evening, the National Hurricane Center issues storm surge warnings for the areas around the Outer Banks in North Carolina and the South Santee River in SC.

Catastrophic floods could follow if the storm stalls inland, it said.

In announcing his evacuation order, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said an estimated 1 million people would be fleeing the coast.

Hurricanes produce three major kinds of threats: storm surge, damaging winds, and inland flooding from rainfall. "One thing we do know is when you replace natural vegetation with parking lots and homes and impervious surfaces, you increase the runoff". "Don't bet your life on riding out a monster", he said.

Officials are anxious that the downpours caused by the hurricane could result in heavy flooding, like that seen after Hurricane Harvey hit Texas in 2017. To assist the South Carolina Highway patrol with a smooth transition and movement, Guardsmen were positioned on the roads at traffic control points, assisting local law enforcement with evacuation routes and lane reversals.

From the Ocracoke Inlet to the North Carolina-Virginia border and from the South Santee River to North Myrtle Beach, the NHC forecast that water could rise as high as 6 feet.

But his partner, Emily Whisler, said she will remain behind at the university where she is a resident in the psychiatry program.

Maps of Florence's trajectory showed its center most likely to strike the southern coast of North Carolina.

The last Category 4 hurricane to plough into North Carolina was Hazel in 1952, a devastating storm that killed 19 people and destroyed some 15,000 homes.

"This storm is going to be a direct hit".

North Carolina has roughly 2,100 industrial-scale pork farms containing more than 9 million hogs - typically housed in long metal sheds with grated floors created to allow the animals' urine and feces to fall through and flow into nearby open-air pits containing millions of gallons of untreated sewage. That means the storm will have more time to unload heavy rain over the entire area under its shroud.

Communities in Florence's path could lose electricity for weeks due to downed power lines and flooded equipment, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) administrator Brock Long said.

Florence's path has it slowing and spinning just off the coast of North Carolina.

Utility companies deployed crews and gear in advance, according to trade group, the Edison Electric Institute.

As for what this region could see from the storm, Cantore said it is still hard to pin down exactly what to expect.

"Get to a safe place now or by Thursday morning", he said.

A state of emergency has been declared in Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington amid concern over potential torrential rain and flooding.

But Cooper said he believed Florence will be "so fierce" that the state needs to provide an "added incentive" for people to leave.

President Donald Trump has insisted that the government is "absolutely, totally prepared" for the arrival of the hurricane.

Mr Trump faced severe criticism for his administration's response to Hurricane Maria previous year in Puerto Rico.
