Mallya backtracks after saying he met Arun Jaitley before leaving India

Met finance minister before leaving the country Vijay Mallya

Mallya, who faces charges of defrauding banks to the tune of Rs 9,000 crore, said he did not file any clemency plea in the Karnataka High Court where he was ready to settle all dues.

Three back-to-back statements and clarifications from absconding liquor king and alleged fraudster Vijay Mallya and Union finance minister Arun Jaitley about their unofficial encounter at some place in Parliament (which both agreed that it happened), raises some serious questions.

On being asked whether he met any other BJP leader before leaving for London, he said, "Over a period of time, I have met many colleagues in Parliament and expressed to them my desire to settle with the banks. That is the truth", he responded.

Arun Jaitley was the finance minister in 2016 when Mallya left India.

On being asked how he plans to repay the banks with his assets being frozen, Mallya said that the decision in this regard will have to be taken by the Enforcement Directorate.

Attacking Rahul Gandhi at a press meet, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesperson Sambit Patra, showing a purported confessional statement of a hawala trader, who alleged that the Congress chief had links with a shell company.

Jaitley, in his long post, said that since 'he (Vijay Mallya) was a Rajya Sabha member and he occasionally attended the House, he misused that privilege on one occasion while I was walking walking out the house to go my room'.

Jaitley said Mallya accosted him in Parliament, and that he made "an offer of settlement". "We need proper disclosures, full inquiries on this", he said. The remarks also come on the back of charges by the Opposition that the government lax attitude had allowed "defaulters" such as Mallya to flee the country. I even did not receive any paper from him at that time. "My conscience is clear and (I) put nearly Rs15,000 crore worth of assets on the table of the Karnataka High Court", he said.

Mallya, who arrived in London in March 2016 and was arrested in April 2017, was present in court as his legal team and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), acting on India's behalf, reiterated and substantiated points made at earlier hearings on loans from IDBI Bank.

"I have no comment, you are hearing everything in court", he added on further questions by the reporters.

"I am certainly a scapegoat, I feel like a scapegoat".

Mallya reportedly told the court the same thing during his hearing today.

The bench of Emma Arbuthnot is likely to take a final call on handing over Mallya to Indian authorities after reviewing the video on Barrack 12 of Arthur Road jail in Mumbai.
