Macron Says Pro-Brexit Politicians 'Liars', Rejects May 'Chequers' Plan

Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May

They've spent two days in Salzburg, Austria trying to do just that, but with no clear solution in sight, the sides have tried to ramp up pressure on each other.

Muscat's stance was reiterated by Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis, who said he would support Britain holding another vote on European Union membership.

Tusk was speaking at the end of an European Union summit in Salzburg, where the leaders of the 27 remaining states in the bloc were discussing Brexit.

Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit proposals were declared dead by the British media on Friday after what they cast as a humiliation at the hands of European Union leaders at an informal summit in Salzburg.

Labour MP Jo Swinson, from the People's Vote movement pushing for a second referendum on Brexit, said "Chequers is dead" and "whatever comes out of the negotiations now will inevitably be a very bad deal for Britain".

European leaders were equally blunt, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel saying the EU27 were agreed that, "in the matter of the single market, there can be no compromises".

"It was a good and courageous step by the prime minister", Macron told reporters.

"We're ready for that eventuality, should it occur".

- Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said his country is better prepared for a no-deal Brexit than Britain and an agreement is "not easy" because of Mrs May's red lines.

Now that's expected to last until the end of 2020 but if there is no deal to avoid the hard border in Ireland and a political declaration outlining future relations then there will be no so-called transition period.

Earlier EU leaders called the prime minister's bluff by slamming her post-Brexit plan for trade and refusing to rule out a no-deal scenario. The removal of border infrastructure was a key part of the Good Friday Agreement that brought peace to Northern Ireland after years of sectarian strife.

Donald Tusk, European Council president, said May's signal proposal to create a British-European free trade regime covering agriculture and goods - but not services - was not acceptable. "Tusk said a Brussels summit on October 18 would be a "moment of truth" to overcome remaining big problems and leaders penciled in the weekend of November 17-18 to formalize a final agreement".

But EU leaders sounded unconvinced as they filed into the summit on Thursday morning. She insisted that her proposals - the so-called Chequers plan - is the only option left.

"Everybody shared the view that while there are positive elements in the Chequers proposal, the suggested framework for economic co-operation will not work, not least because it is undermining the single market", he said at the conclusion of the two-day meeting.

Officials on both sides of the Channel hope this summit will give new impetus to divorce negotiations ahead of a crunch summit in Brussels on October 18. It's the first full gathering of the EU28 since May unveiled her Chequers plan - named after her country residence where it was presented to ministers - in July.

He also lashed out at the "liars" of Brexit - insisting Britain would lose out.

The campaign for another poll has also attracted hefty financial backing, including from Hungarian-US billionaire George Soros, with a series of events staged across Britain over the summer to drum up support.

'No deal is not my working assumption, ' said EU Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker.
