Losing Speed, Tropical Storm Florence Will Continue Slowly Through The Carolinas

Police confirmed the fatalities on Twitter, saying the father of the child was being transported to a local medical centre to be treated for his injuries.

The 63-year-old former firefighter says he was able to sleep through the torrential rain and thrashing winds when then-Hurricane Florence made landfall early Friday morning, only waking up to texts he received at 7 a.m. from friends checking up on him.

"Our hearts go out to the families of those who died in this storm", Gov. Roy Cooper said in a press release.

A fallen tree crashed through the home where a woman and her baby were killed in Wilmington North Carolina after Hurricane Florence made landfall.

The storm battered the coastline throughout Friday and Saturday with hurricane-force winds and as much as 2ft (60cm) of rain in some areas of North Carolina.

Across the Trent River from New Bern, Jerry and Jan Andrews returned home after evacuating to find carp flopping in their backyard near the porch stairs.

The hurricane center bulletin warned that more rain was coming.

"It's just unfortunate that people look for these opportunities to prey on the vulnerabilities of these people when the situation is at its worst", he said.

Two people also died in Harkers Island, North Carolina, on Friday, Carteret County Director of Emergency Services Stephen Rea said Saturday. That number was down to 40 later in the day.

Hurricane Matthew sent more than 5 feet of water into their home in 2016, and the couple feared Florence would run them out again. The slow-moving storm is still dumping colossal amounts of rain on North Carolina and parts of northern SC.

The rising sea crept towards the two-storey home of Tom Copeland, who lives on a spit of land surrounded by water in Swansboro.

In an update published at 5:33 a.m. ET on Saturday, the agency said that the storm is now striking SC and has a path through the in-land charted for the next few days.

Since midnight, peak wind gusts reached 32 miles per hour in Raleigh and 47 miles per hour in Fayetteville. Calls for help multiplied as the wind picked up and the tide rolled in.

The storm's movement, not its strength, has forecasters and officials anxious. Expert scientists, however, had said they were anxious about Brunswick because of scant public information about its readiness.

A severe inland flood threat is emerging as remnants of Florence pound the Carolinas with almost nonstop rain for a second day since the once major hurricane howled ashore.

New Bern resident Latasha Jones is one of the more fortunate ones.

He picked up 10 people on one run and took them to a shelter.

"The fact that there haven't been more deaths and damage is wonderful and a blessing", said Rebekah Roth, walking around Wilmington's Winoca Terrace neighborhood on Saturday.

For people living inland in the Carolinas, maximum peril could come days later as all that water drains, overflowing rivers and causing flash floods.

Local resident Peggy Perry told CNN she was "stuck in the attic" along with three relatives. Trying to return too soon, or using drones to survey damage, "can interfere with and delay the work of emergency responders". CORRECTING TYPO IN CITY NAME People are rescued by members of the U.S. Army during the passing of Hurricane Florence in the town of New Bern, North Carolina, U.S. September 14, 2018. "People who live in New Bern have experienced hurricanes before, but it has been a long time since we have experienced something like this".

In Belhaven, the Pungo River roared into town, crashing up against homes at a waist-high level and higher late Thursday and early Friday, video from Amy Johnson showed.
