Landslide crashes on to tourist beach on Zante

Tourists enjoyed ‘Shipwreck Beach’ in 2017

At least seven people have been injured after a rockfall at a popular beach on the Greek Island of Zakynthos.

It is one of the Ionian island's main attractions, in part because of the shipwreck on the shore and also because of its surrounding steep cliffs.

Also known as "shipwreck beach", the cove is only accessible by sea, and is famous for the wreckage of a small cargo ship that has been washed up on the beach since the '80s.

According to BBC News, at least seven people were injured.

Their injuries were not life-threatening, fire brigade and coast guard officials said.

Footage of the incident, which took place at Navagio Beach on the isle of Zakynthos, shows tourists fleeing as the large sheet of rock breaks away from the cliff face.

A couple of small vessels overturned from the force of the fall that caused high waves, witnesses told authorities. He believed more were coming, so he started running. Rescue services employed sniffer dogs to search the beach itself for possible victims of the rockfall.

There were no people missing but authorities had air and sea assets in the area and were conducting a search as a precaution, in case people were trapped under the rocks, one official said.

The 21-year-old, who works for a tour company on the island, said: "The rock that fell, oh gosh, it would be like a four storey building falling onto the beach".

There were many tourists with children at the beach who were evacuated on boats.
