Hurricane Florence cancels IMG-St. John's national showdown

Hurricane Florence is heading toward the US East Coast the National Hurricane Center said

Streams of cars clogged roads leading away from the coast of North and SC on Tuesday as residents began fleeing ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Florence, a powerful Category 4 storm barreling towards the eastern U.S. states.

As of Tuesday morning, close to 1.5 million people were under evacuation orders in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.

North Carolina High School Athletic Association Commissioner Que Tucker issued a statement that said, per state policy, that the regular season schedule is governed by the member schools and conferences, but added that "Every decision should be made with the safety of all participants in mind".

Packing maximum sustained winds of 140 miles per hour (225 km per hour), Florence's trajectory showed its center most likely to strike the southern coast of North Carolina by Friday, the National Hurricane Center said.

Hurricane Florence, a powerful Category 4 hurricane poised to strengthen over the next 24 hours, is expected to make landfall somewhere between North and SC by late Thursday.

Communities in Florence's path could lose electricity for weeks due to downed power lines and flooded equipment, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Brock Long said.

"This one really scares me", said the National Hurricane Center director, Ken Graham, who called the storm's size "staggering".

President Donald Trump on September 11 declared states of emergency for North and SC, to open avenues for federal aid.

The federal response there was an "unsung success", said Trump on Tuesday, blaming the island's catastrophe on an electric grid and generating plant that "was dead before the storm ever hit".

The storm is now about 950 miles from the Carolina coast line, but moving in that direction at about 15 mph.

Boards are set up outside a grocery store before Hurricane Florence makes landfall.

Liz Browning Fox was planning to ride out the storm on the Outer Banks, defying evacuation orders. It stretches 340 miles across, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

In addition to flooding the coast with wind-driven storm surges of seawater as high as 13 feet (4 m), Florence could drop 15 to 25 inches (38 to 64 cm) of rain, with up to 35 inches (89 cm) in some spots, forecasters said. People living well inland should prepare to lose power and endure flooding and other hazards, he warned.

While most airlines have started offering travel waivers to those flying to and from the Southeast, a spokesperson for flight data tracking service FlightAware said it doesn't expect to see large numbers of storm-related cancellations until midday Wednesday.

The impending storm, which Trump has warned about on Twitter, forced the president to cancel two campaign rallies this week: one in MS and one in Missouri.

Crews also prepared 16 nuclear reactors in the three-state region for the storm.

Catastrophic floods could follow if the storm stalls inland, it said.

"When these environmental wind patterns weaken, there is no mechanism to continue moving the [tropical cyclone]", Sarah Griffin, a tropical cyclone expert at the University of Wisconsin, told us.
