Google to shut down Inbox app in March 2019

Google's Inbox is a different approach to email than the standard Gmail app. Josh Miller CNET

Google has already brought many features from Inbox over to Gmail, so one might say that it was inevitable that Google would kill off Inbox.

Nearly four years ago, Google introduced a new email client called Inbox. The app presented features not found in the Gmail experience and earned itself some faithful users as a result.

"Inbox by Gmail has been a great place to experiment with new ideas like snoozing emails to later, as well as try the latest AI-powered experiences like Smart Reply, Nudges and high-priority notifications to help you stay productive", Izatt writes. The app which served as an experimental testbed for Gmail features as well as a streamlined email client for the service, has apparently outlived its welcome with the company. Fast forward several months and Google's plans for Inbox crumbled to dust, as the search giant confirmed to The Verge that it will shut down the app in March 2019. In fact, most of its best features have, including Unified Inbox. At that time, the company will discontinue the app. It's a service many of us use every single day.

The service - which came in the form of iOS and Android apps and its own website - funneled mails from your Gmail account to a different, slightly more gesture-driven interface with its own unique set of options.

Google has published a support guide to help Inbox users make the transition back to Gmail. Inbox was also a lot cleaner than Gmail, which tends to feel cluttered.

I know quite a few Gmail users who switched to Inbox when it was released.
