Game of Thrones wins Outstanding Drama Series at the 2018 Emmys!

Emmy Awards celebrate best of television with Game of Thrones, Westworld leading nominations

Matthew Rhys took his first best drama actor Emmy for playing a conflicted Russian spy in the final season of the FX Cold War series "The Americans".

The 49-year old actor took home the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Tyrion Lannister in the HBO hit series Game of Thrones at the 70th annual Emmy's ceremony held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Monday.

"It's about a woman who's finding her voice anew, and it's one of the things that's happening all over the country now", she said. "Mrs. Maisel" also won a total of seven other awards, including best actress for Rachel Brosnahan.

"I don't even believe in God, but I am going to thank her tonight", Newton said.

SURPRISE: Alex Borstein won supporting comedy actress for her work on "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" this year, topping an incredibly competitive category of eight nominees total, including last year's victor Kate McKinnon, who was predicted to win again.

SURPRISE: Love is in the air - Glenn Weiss, who won the variety special directing award, used his time on stage to propose - with the ring his father gave his mother more than six decades ago. The Saint Ignatius College Prep grad noted that his wife refused to join him at the Emmys because she didn't want to watch him lose.

HBO's "Game of Thrones" was named best drama series, beating last year's champion "The Handmaid's Tale".

Other big winners included FX's The Assassination of Gianni Versace, which won Emmys for best limited series and best lead actor in a limited series for Darren Criss, who took a dark turn as the designer's killer Andrew Cunanan.

Sandra Oh, who could become the first actor of Asian descent to win a lead acting trophy played along from her seat: "Thank you, but it's an honour just to be Asian", said the Korean-Canadian star. "You wonder why I don't like to call you my girlfriend?"

"Saturday Night Live" creator Lorne Michaels, producing his second Emmy telecast in 30 years, is tasked with turning viewership around after the 2017 show's audience of 11.4 million narrowly avoided the embarrassment of setting a new low.
