Former Trump campaign adviser sentenced to 14 days in prison

The defense portrayed Papadopoulos, who served as a foreign policy adviser to President Trump's campaign, as an eager aide who was in over his head, and pushed back on claims by the prosecution that he had harmed the FBI investigation.

To cap off yet another turbulent week inside the administration of President Donald Trump, a former advisor whose contacts with Russians set off the investigation into possible collusion with Moscow was jailed on Friday for lying to the FBI.

He also talked about his contact with Joseph Mifsud, a United Kingdom professor peddling dirt from Russian officials about Clinton.

That clashes with what Sessions, a key campaign aide and now Trump's attorney general, told the House Judiciary Committee last November.

He said that at the time of the meeting, more seasoned foreign policy experts were being "scooped up" by other Republican campaigns, and that Trump did not have "elite" people working for him.

"My recollection differs from Jeff Sessions", he said.

Papadopoulos also said on "The View" that he is an energy specialist who, when he began working on the Trump campaign, had contacts in the Middle East, but not with Russian Federation. "He was open to the idea and he deferred of course to then senior Senator Jeff Sessions who I remember being quite enthusiastic".

Papadopoulos was the second person ordered to prison in the sprawling, 16-month Russian Federation collusion investigation of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

"I actively sought to leverage my contacts with the professor to host this meeting", Papadopoulos told ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos in an exclusive interview on This Week Sunday.

"All I can say is that my testimony might have helped move something towards that, but I have no idea", he said.

At the same time, he said he recognized that Papadopoulos had "genuine remorse" for "letting himself get caught up".

"Papadopoulos told us. there was no offer of emails, that was simply a statement", Bongino said.

So far, campaign chairman Paul Manafort; Mr Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen; Deputy campaign manager Rick Gates and National security adviser Michael Flynn have all pled or been found guilty.

Papadopoulos told Hannity it felt like a bomb was dropped on him. Downer was said to have informed US officials, leading the FBI to open its Russian Federation investigation during the 2016 election.

According to the Mueller team's federal indictment, the 31-year-old was told by Mifsud in April 2016 that Russian officials had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton in the form of "thousands of emails".

Abby Hunstsman pressed Papadopoulos on the believability of his story, noting people find it unusual he "wouldn't even try and find a way to contact the campaign to let them know that someone had Clinton's emails".
