Finau gets final USA Ryder Cup wildcard

Russell Knox missed out of a place in Europe's Ryder Cup team for 2018

The West High School Graduate and Lehi resident was the final pick for US captain Jim Furyk.

Furyk explained his decision for choosing Finau, on the Ryder Cup website.

Tony Finau celebrated his Ryder Cup selection in style with some of his finest Samoan dance moves!

Finau had been expected to get the 12th and final spot on the Ryder Cup team based on his overall play, particularly of late. He checked a lot of boxes and made it impossible not to pick him.

The U.S. roster for the tournament, which will take place September 28-30 outside Paris, was determined by automatic qualifiers based off rankings after the PGA Championship. Yet he has played so well in top-tier events this year that he seems likely to win multiple times in the future, and that's where the Ryder Cup experience will come into play. Finau has 11 top-10 finishes this season, three in majors (a tie for 10th in the Masters, fifth in the U.S. Open and a tie for ninth in the Open Championship) and has finished among the top-10 in all three FedEx Cup playoffs entering the Tour Championship.

The eight US players who qualified automatically are US Open and US PGA Championship champion Brooks Koepka, Masters victor Patrick Reed, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson.

"I liked what I saw", Furyk said of Finau's play on the French host layout. Throw in Woods and Mickelson, and that gives the USA team a lineup that has combined for 31 majors. Finau was raised in a tough section of Salt Lake City known as Rose Park.

"Excited to join the team and do whatever it takes to help us bring home a victory!" That's something that our Captain has stressed to us.

With that, Finau was off on a plane bound for home in Utah, a longtime dream still sinking in with every mile.
