Evacuations in U.S. ahead of Hurricane Florence

Most wind damage will occur Friday and early Saturday as the storm slowly passes through southern North Carolina into SC. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for South Santee River, South Carolina to Duck, North Carolina and the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds.

The National Hurricane Centre said it was expected to keep drawing energy from the warm water and intensify to near Category 5, which means winds of 157 miles per hour or higher. Roy Cooper urged residents in evacuation areas of his state to get out while they still can.

Masters said there's a tug-of-war between two clear-skies high-pressure systems - one off the coast and one over MI. It could stall just off the coast and then drift south along the SC coast and possibly make a landfall as a weaker system if it doesn't make it clearly over the coast of North Carolina.

"Do you want to get hit with a train or do you want to get hit with a cement truck?" said Jeff Byard, an administrator with the US Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Up to 1.7million residents on the eastern seaboard have been scrambling to evacuate their homes as government officials warned the hurricane would deliver a "Mike Tyson punch" to South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia.

The Category 2 storm, which was downgraded from a Category 4 but will affect millions in the Southeast, is expected to bring storm surges, flash flooding, heavy rainfall and forceful winds to North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, as well as parts of the Mid-Atlantic states, the National Hurricane Center warned.

Florence is one of the strongest hurricanes on the eastern seaboard in decades, and will bring a triple threat of unsafe storm surge, flooding and hurricane-force winds in parts of the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic states.

After making landfall this Friday (Sept. 14), the massive storm will now "wobble" southward and then head west, making a "big, grand tour" of the southeastern United States, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) meteorologist Kevin Scasny said in a statement released today (Sept. 12).

"It truly is really about the whole size of this storm", National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said. Surges as high as 9-to-13 feet are now forecast from Cape Fear to Cape Lookout.

About 10 million people live in areas that were under either hurricane or tropical storm warnings and watches Thursday.

For many of those under evacuation orders, getting out of harm's way has proved difficult, as airlines canceled flights and motorists had a hard time finding gas.

Boarding up his home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Chris Pennington watched the forecasts and tried to decide when to leave.

People across the region rushed to buy bottled water and other supplies, board up their homes, pull their boats out of the water and get out of town.

At 11 a.m., Florence was spinning less than 200 miles from the coast.

"Against my better judgment, due to emotionalism, I evacuated", he said. Millions of people are expected to lose power and it could take weeks to resolve the outages.

The overall trend is "exceptionally bad news", said University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy, since it "smears a landfall out over hundreds of miles of coastline, most notably the storm surge".

Storm surge can be the deadliest part of a hurricane, and is only partially affected by wind speeds.
