David Wright to be activated for Mets' final homestand

We’ll wonder about David Wright the player — we won’t about the person

It looks like the end of an era in Queens.

Wright, who Wilpon referred to as "one of the finest players and people to ever wear the uniform - Mets uniform or any uniform", will be activated prior to the team's final homestand on Sept. 25, and will start at third base on Saturday, Sept. 29.

Although Wright did not say that he will officially retire, he conceded that his physical condition will not improve and doesn't think playing beyond that game will be possible.

The team said Wright will be activated for the homestand, which begins September 25, and will make his final start at third base September 29 against the Miami Marlins. "Whether it's my back, my neck, my shoulder, some days that pain in any one of those three areas, or all three of the areas, can be moderate and manageable". "So yeah, I don't see [playing beyond September] as a possibility".

He characterized his rehab as a near-constant struggle.

Wright signed an eight-year, $138 million contract before the 2013 season and is set to make a total of $20 million this year, despite not playing in a Major League Baseball game since 2016. During a press conference on Thursday, Wright announced that it will likely be the last series of his career.

In 13 seasons with the Mets, Wright - a seven-time All-Star - has hit.296/.376/.491 with 242 homers, 390 doubles, 970 RBI, and 949 runs scored.

As is typical for the Mets there has been confusion as to what the actual plan was, with Wright strongly suggesting he was ready to play while the Mets seemed inclined to hold him back. "And, throughout this process, the love and the support and the respect from inside and outside the organization has meant the world to me".
