Cary Fukunaga to direct next James Bond film for release in 2020

James Bond through the years

Producers Michael G Wilson, Barbara Broccoli and star Daniel Craig on Thursday announced director Cary Joji Fukunaga as the director of Bond 25.

'We are delighted to be working with Cary.

Cary Joji Fukunaga has been announced as the director of Bond 25. This shifts Bond back four months from its previous launch date of October 25, and takes the 007 installment out of its traditional winter slot.

The filmmaker has been described as a "left field" choice by the James Bond International Fan Club, but that his hiring is "in keeping with the art house, independent sensibility" of other names that had been attached to the franchise.

In addition to the first season of True Detective, Fukunaga's credits include the Netflix series Maniac starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill, as well as the feature film Beasts of No Nation starring Idris Elba. The change puts a slight delay in the schedule for 007's next adventure: Bond 25 will begin filming at London's Pinewood Studios on 4 March 2019, and comes out just under a year later on 14 February 2020.

The acclaimed film, on which Fukunaga was also cinematographer, won a handful of industry awards, including the Independent Spirit Awards for best male lead for Abraham Attah and the best supporting male for Elba, and a George Foster Peabody Award for excellence.

Fukunaga, who had not been tipped for the role, will become the first American to direct a movie in the storied spy franchise, which began life on the big screen in 1963. The pair have written every Bond film since The World Is Not Enough, including high points like Casino Royale and Skyfall, and wobblier entries like Die Another Day and Quantum Of Solace.
