Browns to release Josh Gordon

Josh Gordon Released by Cleveland Browns

The Browns shocked the NFL Saturday when they announced they meant to release the brilliant but troubled Gordon amid reports that he injured his hamstring at a promo shoot and was "not himself" when he showed up to team facilities.

Gordon was surprisingly declared out for Sunday's game earlier on Saturday, and it was also reported he would not travel with the team to New Orleans.

General manager John Dorsey issued the following statement in regards to the move. Through six seasons, Gordon appeared in 41 games, hauling in 130 catches for 3,106 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Dorsey added. "For the past six years the Browns have fully supported and invested in Josh, both personally and professionally and wanted the best for him, but unfortunately we've reached a point where we feel it's best to part ways and move forward".

Gordon was late to the facility today, Rapoport reported. Gordon reportedly had told the team his hamstring was bothering him.

Josh Gordon's tenure with the Cleveland Browns will likely go down as one of the most riveting, mercurial and ultimately tragic sagas in the city's colorful sports history, but that doesn't mean the wide receiver hasn't seen his last National Football League snap.

This franchise has been beyond forgiving to Gordon throughout the years and it appeared they would finally be repaid for that loyalty this season.

Gordon was a second-round pick by the Browns in the 2012 NFL Supplemental Draft.

The NFL reinstated Gordon last season after he completed a lengthy rehab program. Schefter later tweeted that league sources think the Browns will attempt to trade Gordon prior to Monday.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon looks on at a drill during the final day of training camp in Berea Tuesday. Additionally, Gordon was on the receiving end of five passes that went for gains of at least 20 yards and converted 12 first downs.
