At Debate, O’Rourke Denies Trying to Flee Scene of DWI

Beto vs Cruz debate live stream

O'Rourke has become a national icon as he has toured Texas, campaigning in every single county and outraising Cruz - a notorious GOP crusader reviled even by his own colleagues - with small-donor donations and not a cent from corporate PACs.

He said there has been a war on a police officers for several years, and it's troubling to see a lawmaker as prominent as O'Rourke seemingly side against law enforcement. Snappy and heavy on snark, Cruz and O'Rourke held nothing back in the first of three debates. O'Rourke stated that his plan is to "free Dreamers from the fear of deportation", while Cruz said his stance on immigration could be summarized in four words: "legal, good; illegal, bad".

O'Rourke criticized Cruz during the debate for failing to rebuke Trump administration tariffs against China, which he said would hurt Texas trade interests. Cruz said the accuser deserves to be heard and treated with respect, while O'Rourke went further, saying there needs to be an FBI investigation into the allegation. "But I'll tell you something, I've been to too many police funerals".

"Ms. Ford's allegations must be investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, full stop", Mr. O'Rourke began his comments.

Moreover, O'Rourke said bringing weapons into the classroom are not going to make students safer.

On the Supreme Court and economics, the specter of President Trump loomed large.

"You were the runner up in the Republican primary for president, you ran against then NY businessman Donald Trump". At this point, he has outraised Cruz and outspent him on television.

Cruz also said school shootings are a result of "removing God from the public square", and he called for more armed police officers in schools.

The exchange quickly turned into a broader tiff over judicial nominees, with Cruz seeking to tie O'Rourke to Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, and claiming they both want judges who would effectively overturn the Second Amendment.

This was the first time O'Rourke has challenged reports of the incident.

"Not everybody is totally left, totally right, so you know it's still an effective means to get their message across", said Dana Tyson, manager at the Angry Elephant.

The El Paso Congressman has capitalized on the national attention, appearing on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert and NBC host Ellen Degeneres eponymous program in recent days, but has also made a point to take his pitch not just to Texas' big cities, but more rural and conservative parts of the state.

The spat Cruz had with Trump in the 2016 primary, and the way Cruz capitulated nearly immediately after, was not just a matter of whether Cruz had the principles to stand up for himself or his family.

Mr. O'Rourke, in turn, did not deny he favors higher taxes but stressed instead a format he said favors the wealthy and stands as a misguided move for a nation deeply in debt.
