As Florence Surges Forward, Rethinking What Hurricane Preparation Looks Like

On the forecast track, the center of Florence will move over the southwestern Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Bahamas today, and approach the coast of North Carolina or SC in the hurricane warning area on Thursday and Friday and move slowly near the coastline through Saturday.

Their entire neighborhood evacuated in Wilmington, North Carolina, David and Janelle Garrigus planned to ride out Florence at their daughter's one-bedroom apartment in Charlotte.

"They haven't seen anything like what's coming at us in 25-30 years, maybe ever", President Trump said while appearing with FEMA officials in the Oval Office on Tuesday. "We'll handle it. We're ready, we're able".

"Bad things can happen when you're talking about a storm this size", Trump said Wednesday morning.

In anticipation of the winds and water, 1.7 million people living along the coasts of the Carolinas and Virginia were ordered to evacuate ahead of the storm.

"The Charleston area now is expected to see at least 1-2 inches of rain over the next several days".

"It looks like the hurricane should approach the Wilmington, N.C., area and then potentially stall before shifting south and perhaps paralleling along the coastline towards the Savannah area", Speciale said.

Areas along the coast from Cape Fear to Cape Lookout, NC, including the Neuse, Pamlico, Pungo and Bay rivers may experience storm surges from 9 to 13 feet.

"This is not going to be a glancing blow", warned Jeff Byard, an administrator with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Updated NHC forecasts showed the storm lingering near the coast of the Carolinas, carrying days of heavy rains that could bring intense inland flooding from SC to Virginia.

The National Weather Service is forecasting heavy rainfall Sunday through Tuesday across central SC with flooding potential in the Upstate, northeast Georgia and the mountains of western North Carolina.

Because the storm is still a few days from landfall, the cone of uncertainty for Sunday and Monday shows the Florence could go as far south as southern Georgia or as far north as the Tennessee Valley.

"If I need to evacuate I can go to my son's house", Sparks said as he carted a load of water bottles to his vehicle. Some of these reactors - including Duke Energy's Brunswick and Harris nuclear plants in North Carolina and Dominion Energy's Surry plant in Virginia - may be directly in the hurricane's path, Reuters reported.

"This morning I drove around for an hour looking for gas in Cary".

"We hope to have something left when we get home", she said. Workers are being brought in from the Midwest and Florida to help in the storm's aftermath, it said.

"The big picture: There are several characteristics of the changing climate that are helping to increase the risks of damage from Hurricane Florence, even though global warming is not directly causing such a storm to spin up". Home Depot and Lowe's activated emergency response centers to get generators, trash bags and bottled water to stores before and after the storm.
