Another woman accuses Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct

Pence speaks at the 2018 Values Voter Summit in Washington Sept. 22 2018

The New Yorker's indefatigable Ronan Farrow and Jane Mayer report that this one, from freshman year at Yale, has the good judge exposing himself to classmate Deborah Ramirez at a drunken dorm party; though she is fuzzy on some details, she vividly recounts the essentials.

The statement from Ford's lawyers noted that she would still testify even though "important procedural and logistical issues remain unresolved" and expressed dissatisfaction that the committee does not plan to subpoena Mark Judge, who Ford said was in the room when Kavanaugh allegedly groped her and tried to remove her clothes during a party in their high school years.

Kavanaugh has called Ford's allegation "completely false" and in a statement provided by the White House Sunday night said the incident described by Ramirez "did not happen".

He is set for a dramatic hearing this week involving a university professor who recently came forward accusing him of assaulting her when they were in high school.

The White House and Kavanaugh have denied the allegation as a "smear", and the White House is standing by the president's nominee.

"Senator Feinstein also could have referred these allegations anonymously and confidentially to the Federal Bureau of Investigation when she was made aware of them", committee staff wrote.

"Following Dr. Ford's testimony, Judge Kavanaugh will appear again before the committee", according to a statement from the committee.

The magazine said it had not found eyewitnesses to confirm that Mr Kavanaugh was at the party.

Justice Kavanaugh is the second judge being nominated by Trump on the nine-member US Supreme Court.

Ford identified one other witness, Mark Judge, in a September 16 Washington Post article where she first told her story.

The White House is approaching Ford's potential testimony with trepidation, nervous that an emotional performance might not just damage Kavanaugh's chances but could further energize female voters to turn out against Republicans in November against the backdrop of the #MeToo movement.

Meanwhile, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Committee on the Judiciary Ranking member Dianne Feinstein, in a letter, urged President Donald Trump to direct the Federal Bureau of Investigation to immediately and thoroughly investigate Ford's allegations and report to the Senate as soon as possible.

They said in the statement that Ramirez never described the incident until after Kavanaugh was nominated to the Supreme Court.

Even before the latest turns, the carefully negotiated hearing at the Senate judiciary committee with Kavanaugh and Ford carried echoes of the Anita Hill hearings in 1991.

The two parties will testify separately - first Ford, followed by Kavanaugh's response - the Senate Judiciary Committee confirmed.

Meanwhile, the White House Spokesperson Kerri Kupec noted that the decades-old allegations brought up against the judge were timed and "designed to tear down a good man".

Trump, who has also faced accusations of sexual assault, stepped up his defense of Kavanaugh on Friday, questioning the legitimacy of Ford's account in a series of tweets. Ford has alleged Kavanaugh was "stumbling drunk" when it happened.

The agreement for Ford to testify came just hours before the New Yorker magazine published the Ramirez article.

Durbin told ABC's "This Week" that some Republicans "reached out to Democratic senators and assured them that they are looking to this as kind of a determination as to how their final vote" on Kavanaugh is cast. Kavanaugh could have addressed the accusation during weeks of rigorous vetting by the committee, including three days of public hearings.

But before long, Christine Blasey Ford knew better.
