This news outlet was unimpressed by U.S. president Donald Trump's second choice to fill a vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court.

But Trump acknowledged there could be a delay in approving the nominee as pressure built for Congress to reopen hearings to review the bombshell allegation.

"Obviously, if Judge Kavanaugh has lied about what happened, that would be disqualifying", she said. "Never had even a little blemish on his record", Trump said.

He described as "ridiculous" the suggestion that Kavanaugh might withdraw his candidacy.

Stressing that Kavanaugh had already testified and undergone Federal Bureau of Investigation background checks, Conway said: "I think you have to weigh this testimonial evidence from Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh along with the considerable body of evidence that is already there about the judge's temperament and qualifications and character". It's an artificial deadline - one that suddenly has taken outsized importance because Republicans believe that any delay equals a loss of momentum for Kavanaugh.

Christine Blasey Ford, a professor in California, has accused Kavanaugh of attempting to sexually assault her while they were at a high school party in the 1980s.

The Republican-dominated committee was scheduled to vote on Kavanaugh's nomination on Thursday, clearing the way for a full Senate vote before November's midterm elections.

"On Friday, Judge Kavanaugh 'categorically and unequivocally" denied this allegation.

Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh appears during a Senate confirmation hearing on September Washington.

The explosive assault claim makes the Supreme Court the latest USA institution to be rocked by fallout from the year-old #MeToo movement exposing sexual misconduct.

In careful remarks at the White House in which he did not offer his view on the actual allegation against his nominee, Mr Trump called for the Senate to go through a "full process".

"This is something that should have been brought up long before this". She said she was afraid that he might "inadvertently" kill her. Ford said she was able to get away when the other teen, whom she identified as Mark Judge, jumped on top of her and Kavanaugh, toppling the pile of bodies.

Republicans hold a slim 11-10 advantage on the Judiciary Committee.

In light of Ford coming forward, there have been questions about the upcoming vote for Kavanaugh's nomination.

White House spokeswoman Kerri Kupec told Reuters on Monday that Kavanaugh and the White House both stand by the judge's denial of the allegation.

White House senior counselor Kellyanne Conway told reporters Monday that Ford "should not be ignored or insulted; she should be heard", adding that Ford should also testify under oath on Capitol Hill.

Graham, a Republican on the Judiciary Committee, said the allegation is "serious" but is also 36 years old.

Tillis, appearing on CBS's "Face the Nation", said he hasn't seen the letter and that he's "shocked that the matter didn't come up in the almost 32 hours of testimony" that Kavanaugh gave during his Senate confirmation hearing last week.

In morning television interviews, Mrs Katz said her client was willing to tell her story in public to the judiciary panel, although no politicians or their aides had yet contacted her.

Christine Blasey Ford discussed her accusation in an interview with The Washington Post.

'We have heard from nobody, ' Katz told CNN's 'New Day'.
