Five people, a child among them, have been injured in a shooting in the city of Syracuse in the USA state of NY, local reports say.

Fowler did not disclose the condition of the five wounded people. Police believe that the victims were hit from across the street. The names of the wounded have not yet been released but police say their age ranges from between 8 and 35 years old.

"This is very tragic event", Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler said during a news conference.

Officers were dispatched to the home located on Syracuse's south side around 9 p.m. after reports that multiple people there had been shot. "This is something that can not occur in our community".

They were gathered there to celebrate the life of a relative who died of cancer. When the shots rang out, the neighbors ran into the house to take cover.

Syracuse is about 250 miles (402km) northwest of New York City. Local media reported that gunfire erupted at a gathering and that a child may have been among those injured. While it is still unclear if the two incidents are related, a 14-year-old female teen was rushed to hospital from the second scene with a reported gunshot wound to her lower back, police said.
