WFU Assistant Basketball Coach Accused of Punching, Killing NYC Tourist

Wake Forest Assistant Basketball Coach Jamill Jones Charged With Assaulting Man Who Later Died

Jamill Jones, 35, of Kernerville, North Carolina, was arrested Thursday and charged with third-degree assault.

Police charged a Wake Forest assistant basketball coach Thursday with assault in connection with an incident Sunday that resulted in the death of a man in NY.

USA Today reported Jones turned himself in Thursday.

Police say a college basketball coach threw a punch that killed a New York City tourist who knocked on his vehicle window thinking it was his Uber ride.

Wake Forest University assistant coach Jamill Jones was arraigned Thursday night on a misdemeanor assault charge and released on his own recognizance.

Szabo fell back, hit his head on the pavement and lost consciousness, according to police. "We will make a further statement after we learn more about the matter".

A person familiar with the investigation told The Associated Press that Szabo may have been drunkenly banging on auto windows before Jones allegedly confronted him. He was treated for fractures to the left side of his face and the rear of his skull, along with bleeding of the brain. The Jones family sends their deepest condolences and sympathies to the Szabo family. One of its assistants has reportedly been charged in an attack on a NY tourist who later died.

Jones just completed his second season as an assistant at Wake Forest.

As an assistant coach at Wake Forest, Jones joined the staff in May 2017. The Philadelphia native is a 2008 graduate of Arkansas Tech.

Szabo, who lived in Boca Raton with his brother, always had a bright smile and shared a love of fishing, cooking and family, the company said.

"We're going to say one thing and that's all".
