Trump Orders Flags Lowered: 'I Repsect Senator John McCain's Service'

Donald Trump expresses 'respect' for John McCain and orders US flags to fly at half-mast after criticism

Two days after his death, President Trump finally got around to commenting on the late Sen.

All three Arizona sporting legends are listed as being friends of McCain, who passed on Saturday, Aug. 25, at the age of 81 years old.

Among the names floated as possible replacements include McCain's wife, Cindy, a philanthropist and businesswoman; Kirk Adams, Ducey's chief of staff; Barbara Barrett, the first Republican woman to run for Arizona governor; Jon Kyl, former U.S. Senate Republican whip; Karrin Taylor Robson, founder of a land-use strategy company; former congressmen Matt Salmon and John Shadegg; and state treasurer Eileen Klein.

At the same time, the White House released a statement from the president in which Trump said that, despite differences on policy and politics, he respects McCain's service to the USA and ordered flags be flown at half-staff until his internment. John McCain's Vietnamese jailer said he respected his former inmate and felt sad about his death, as others in Vietnam paid their respects to the former US Navy pilot who became a prisoner of war and later was instrumental in bringing the wartime foes together. "I lived and died a proud American", McCain wrote. "I knew a few things about the senator just from playing in Arizona and getting to know him over the years".

In the years since, McCain was Trump's loudest Republican critic, especially as the president disrupted America's long-time alliances.

"John McCain was a true American hero", said French President Emmanuel Macron.

After Trump noted the death of McCain in a concise and rather dryly-worded tweet on Saturday, without issuing an official statement, he faced a fierce backlash from both Democrats and Republicans.

Trump says 80 percent of the media is fake news and frequently attacks journalists and their outlets, though he does provide more access than is commonly realized because he doesn't hold formal press conferences.

Among the many triumphs of John McCain's long political career was that he proved George Washington Plunkitt wrong. "We are are citizens of the world's greatest republic, a nation of ideals, not blood and soil", he said.

"We weaken our greatness when we confuse our patriotism with tribal rivalries that have sown resentment and hatred and violence in all the corners of the globe", Mr. McCain said.

Through much of Monday, Trump refused to answer reporters' questions about McCain, who refused to support his presidential bid.

"It's truly one of the greatest honors of my life to be able to talk about somebody who served his country so passionately and had been so dedicated to policies of this nation", Fitzgerald said Monday, via Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.

"Americans never quit. We never surrender".

McCain, who's remembered by most as an American hero, will be laid to rest at the U.S. Naval Academy's cemetery in Annapolis, Maryland on Sunday.

Graham will speak on the Senate floor Tuesday about McCain and his legacy.

The President also said he had agreed to the McCain family's request for military transportation of Senator McCain's remains from Arizona to Washington.
