This year, the Perseids peak between the night of Sunday, August 12, and the morning of Monday, August 13.
Moonless nights will make the spectacle of the annual Perseid meteor shower even more scintillating this weekend for much of the world, and sky watchers are expecting a "great show". "The moon is very favorable for the Perseids this year, and that'll make the Perseids probably the best shower of 2018 for people who want to go out and view it". And human habitation in the area can be dated as far back as 10,000 years ago, making this dark sky park the most ancient site in America to view the Perseids.
The Perseid meteor shower is perhaps the most beloved meteor shower of the year for the Northern Hemisphere.
NASA's photo of the lonely Perseid meteor was snapped in the early pre-dawn hours Universal Time when viewing conditions are prime. Though the shower hasn't yet reached its peak, observers have already reported spotting short bursts of high meteor activity (15 meteors per minute) at times, as well as significant meteor activity (~100) over several hours.
So if you're lucky enough to have a chance of catching the Perseid meteor shower, it sounds like you'll be in for a spectacular night of skywatching.
Some years we aren't as lucky because the peak is during a full moon, and the moonlight drowns out the show.
Each time Swift-Tuttle passes through the warmth of the inner solar system, its frozen, 16-mile-wide nucleus releases debris along the comet's path - through which the Earth passes each summer. There's no need to look in any direction - the shooting stars should be visible in every part of the sky, weather permitting. "Remember, you don't have to look directly at the constellation to see them". The longer you're outside in the dark, the better your vision of the meteors will be.
The meteors can be traced to the Perseus constellation, from which they get their name, which will climb in the northeastern sky as the evening passes.
If you're interested in the best possible views of the show should set up shop somewhere dark-with no light pollution or large buildings-where much of the sky is visible.
The best meteor shower in years is happening August 11-13
It will last until August 24, but if you want the best view wait to go stargazing until closer to the night of Sunday, August 12. The best summertime meteor shower - the Perseids - will be coming to a sky near you this coming weekend, weather permitting.
