The first West Nile virus-related death of the year in Dallas County has been reported, the county health department confirmed to WFAA on Tuesday.
DCHHS said there is now no vaccine or specific treatment for West Nile virus. Of those who show symptoms, most will experience mild illness, including fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting and rash on chest, stomach or back. It's now been detected in Ada County.
Also, one positive mosquito pool with 11 mosquitos tested positive for WNV in a pool located in West Brant.
DCHHS recommends that Dallas County residents use an insect repellent containing DEET whenever they go outside, and that they dress in long, loose and light-colored clothing.
They are most active at dawn and dusk and will bite humans as well as other mammals and birds.
Last year, 26 people contracted the virus and two died in Dallas County.
Lyttle added people are most at risk of contracting West Nile virus during the months of July and August. He's a Dallas native and a graduate of the University of North Texas.
