So far this year, one person in Butte County has been confirmed to have the west nile virus, but the Butte County Mosquito and Vector Control District predicts there will be several more cases this year.
"The two pools, or two trap sites that were positive, were found within the City of Kitchener, but really what it means is that conditions are right anywhere across the region", Miller said.
There is also a small risk of infected people developing the more serious West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease, which could cause inflammation of the brain and can also be fatal. The sample was confirmed to be West Nile Virus positive by the lab at the Montana Department of Public Health & Human Services in Helena.
Testing for infected mosquitoes will continue in Clark County. Symptoms include high fever, convulsions and muscle weakness, and the illness can put someone in a comatose state.
"This is the first direct evidence of West Nile activity in our area this summer", reads a release from Hastings Prince Edward Public Health.
Last year, there were 91 deaths out of the more than 1,000 cases that were reported across the US.
This year, West Nile has not yet been found in a Wisconsin resident.
Health officials say the virus has been detected in 169 mosquito samples from across the state.
Health departments have also encouraged residents to remove items from the outside of their home that contain water - such as buckets or pet dishes - because it can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. "Using insect repellent, covering bare skin and avoiding being outdoors during the hours of dusk and dawn are effective ways to help keep you from being bitten by mosquitoes".
