McDonald's offering chance to win McGold Card, free food for life

The Mc Gold Card is real and it could get you free McDonald’s for life

For a chance to win, all you have to do is download the McDonald's app, and then place an order via Mobile Order & Pay any time from August 10 - Aug. 24.

The victor of the contest will receive a "McGold Card", which earns them two free meals per week for the next 50 years - not exactly unlimited food for life, but an offer no hardcore McDonald's fan would sneeze at. To enter, simply place an order for six dozen McDonald's fried apple pies (or whatever you consider lunch) through the McDonald's app, pay with your now second-favorite credit card, and pick up your food under the Golden Arches.

For one thing, it creates a mystique about the idea that other people have this secretive card entitling them to free food.

McDonald's says they will do a random prize drawing "on or about" August 29, 2018.

Every day you order at McDonald's from August 10 to 24, you are automatically entered in the sweepstakes to win free McDonald's for life.

In addition to the free food, the victor will also receive a custom gold-plated phone case. The victor can also cash out the $1,000 app credit.

This means only the victor will be entitled to free meals for life. The giveaway is exclusive to customers who use the app's "Mobile Order & Pay" feature.

Rob Frankel, a Los Angeles-based branding strategy expert, tells CNBC that he's not impressed. "I don't think it's going to do anything to encourage the app usage".

The McGold Card doesn't necessarily mean unlimited food however.

The victor will be alerted via email or on their McDonald's app.

Despite that criticism, McDonald's appears to be following in the footsteps of similar contests run by both Starbucks and Taco Bell.

The fast-food giant launched its mobile app in 2015, then added mobile ordering and payment features previous year.

This is the first time a McGold Card has been awarded in a contest.

This truly is a smart contest on the part of McDonald's. Five winners in the United States won the grand prize, which was worth $56,675 each.
